What’s New & Noteworthy at Media Power Youth

Seeking High School Students for 2023-24 Advisory Board – Apply by April 30th!

Media Power Youth is a youth-development organization that inspires young people to engage with media in thoughtful and creative ways that support their physical and mental well-being. We offer rich learning experiences on media and technology that help students, teachers, and communities build media literacy skills and use media responsibly to advocate for the causes and people that matter most. Through our youth advisory board, the Youth Media Squad, we partner with teens to create new youth programs that address the current issues facing young people. Members also have opportunities to build new media creation and advocacy skills. We are now accepting applications through April 30th.

We want to learn from YOU as teens are the best teachers when it comes to media. You know how to use technology creatively for learning, connecting with friends, and having fun. We also know that these tools can take a toll on friendships and mental health, which can make navigating the digital space difficult at times. What if instead of having to figure it all out on your own, there were programs and resources to guide you along the way? We want to make this a reality, but we can’t do it alone. We are seeking high school students who want to make a difference and share their opinions and perspective on how best to support youth.

As a member of this team, you’ll meet new people while building your advocacy skills. We meet virtually, which allows for more flexibility in your schedule as well as the opportunity to work with high schoolers from across the country. You’ll have the chance to explore trends in media and technology and potential career fields, including education, psychology, public health, and STEM.

We recognize that you are busy with school and extracurricular activities. We respect your time and want to make it easy to make an impact. Here’s what we will ask of participants:

  • Join in a monthly Zoom discussion on the 2nd Monday of each month from 7:00-8:30pm EST (4:00-5:30pm PST) starting Monday, May 8th.
  • Provide feedback on program ideas and/or resources for youth.
  • Contribute content, such as writing a blog article for our website and/or speaking as a guest during one of our youth programs (occasionally throughout the year).

What We’ve Been Up To

Advisory board meetings consist of guest speakers, deep discussions, program reviews, and projects. Some of the things our board has accomplished this year are:

  • Identified real life scenarios for “Tech Talk” media literacy programming
  • Provided feedback on new cyberbullying prevention initiative for middle schools
  • Created social media PSAs and blog posts on topics affecting youth such as body image and managing screen time
  • Provided insight on Media Power Youth after-school media creation experiences
  • Advised MPY on “What Makes a Community”, “Targeted Advertising”, “Memes”, and much more!
